Banking on "Green Money": Are Environmental Financial Responsibility Rules Fulfilling Their Promise? AgEcon
Boyd, James.
Financial responsibility rules are an increasingly common form of environmental regulation. Currently, the operators of landfills, underground petroleum storage tanks, offshore rigs, and oil tankers must demonstrate the existence of adequate levels of capital as a precondition to the legal operation of their businesses. Environmental financial responsibility ensures that firms possess the resources to compensate society for pollution costs created in the course of business operations. In addition to providing a source of funds for victim compensation and pollution remediation, financial responsibility is thought to motivate better decision-making, particularly regarding the management of long-term risks. This article describes both the promise of financial...

Distribution and Depositional History of some Pre-lagoonal Holocene Sediments in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Colombia OceanDocs
Cohen, A.D.; Wiedemann, H.U..
An investigation of the pre-lagoonal Holocene sediments beneath the lagoon Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta (Colombia), was undertaken for the purpose of this region before the formation of the lagoon proper. Core and grab samples were collected from the lagoon for stratigraphic observatiion and analysis in the laboratory. Beneath the recent lagoonal sediments a deposits of peat with intercalated sand and clay was discovered. Its surface lies at a depth of about 2 m below the hydrographic zero level of the lagoon. Three peat samples, obtain from the upper portion of this deposits, were subjected to micropetrographic and pollen analyses. These analyses reveled that, prior to marine inundation, this region in southern Florida (U.S.A.) Sample "f", taken closest...

Investigation on possible chemical pollution of the BouGhraa lagoon south of Tunisia by chemical wastes OceanDocs
Farhat, F.; Ben Aoun, Z.; Chouba, L.; Hadj Ali, M. S..

Landfill leachate as nutritional source in castor bean cultivation under semi-arid conditions AGRIAMBI
Andrade Filho,Jerônimo; Dias,Nildo da S.; Batista,Rafael O.; Santos Júnior,José A.; Santos,Anne G. D.; Lima,Ana L. F..
ABSTRACT The relevance of using technology for the rational destination of waste from a wide range of human activities is imminently paramount. In this context, between September 2014 and January 2015, in Mossoró, RN, Brazil (5º 11' 31" S; 37º 20' 40" W), the present work was conducted to evaluate strategies for the utilization of landfill leachate as source of water and nutrients in agriculture. For this, castor bean plants (Ricinus communis L.), cv. BRS Energia, cultivated in eutrophic Red Yellow Argisol, were subjected to irrigation depth application strategies, namely: initial application of leachate corresponding to 20, 40, 60 and 80% of the irrigation depth and subsequent application of the remaining water depth percentage using public-supply water,...
